Looking for a Tunisian crochet blanket pattern you can make in any size? This free pattern uses a combination of Tunisian knit and purl stitches to create a beautifully textured blanket with simple stripes and a neat, finished border.
As written, this Tunisian crochet baby blanket measures approximately 20 × 24 inches (51 × 61 cm), making it a sweet handmade gift for a new baby. It’s a convenient size for use over a carrier or car seat, too.
One of my favorite things about this pattern is how easily you can customize it! Make a small baby blanket, a cozy lap blanket, or a larger throw by adjusting the starting chain and repeating the stitch pattern until you reach your desired length. You can also switch up the colors to coordinate with a nursery, favorite color scheme, or home decor.

About This Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern
This blanket combines the Tunisian Knit Stitch (Tks) and Tunisian Purl Stitch (Tps) to create alternating sections of smooth, knit-like stitches and textured horizontal ridges.
The blanket is worked flat in rows, with color changes used to create the striped design. After completing the main blanket, you’ll add a simple Tunisian crochet edging along each side for a coordinated finish.
The pattern is a great project for crocheters who already know the basics of Tunisian crochet and want to practice combining different stitches.

If you’re new to Tunisian crochet, my Introduction to Tunisian Crochet tutorial explains how to work the foundation row and basic return pass.
Pattern Notes
- The loop already on your hook counts as the first stitch of each forward pass.
- Work the last stitch of each row through both vertical strands of the edge stitch (the full V) for a neat edge.
- Use a basic return pass throughout: yarn over and draw through 1 loop, then yarn over and draw through 2 loops repeatedly until only 1 loop remains.
- Change colors on the final yarn over of the return pass before beginning the next row.
- The blanket is worked with the larger hook. Switch to the smaller hook when adding the side edgings.
- The instructions below make the original 20 × 24 in. (51 × 61 cm) blanket. See the customization section for adjusting the size.
Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern Instructions
Foundation Row
With the larger 9 mm Tunisian crochet hook and CA, chain 46 (or the number needed for your desired width).
Beginning in the second chain from the hook, pick up a loop in each chain across. You should have 46 loops on your hook, including the starting loop. Complete a basic return pass.
Blanket Rows
Rows 1–2: Tps across — 46 sts.
Rows 3–9: Tks across — 46 sts.
Rows 10–11: With CB, Tps across — 46 sts.
Rows 12–18: With CA, Tks across — 46 sts.
For the original blanket size: Repeat Rows 10–18 six more times, ending with Row 72.
For a customized length: Continue repeating Rows 10–18 until you are ready to work the final two Tunisian Purl Stitch rows, allowing for their height and the bind-off.
Final 2 Rows (Rows 73–74 for the original size): With CA, Tps across — 46 sts for the original blanket, or your chosen stitch count for a customized width.
Bind off in Tss. Fasten off and weave in ends.
How to Customize Your Tunisian Crochet Blanket Size
One of the best features of this pattern is that you can adjust both the width and length to make a blanket that suits your needs. Because everyone’s tension is different, measuring a small swatch first can help you determine the best starting chain for your desired blanket width.
To adjust the width: Chain until your starting chain measures approximately 2 in. (5 cm) less than your desired finished width. Then work the pattern across your chosen number of stitches.
To adjust the length: Continue repeating Rows 10–18 until your blanket is approximately 1 in. (2.5 cm) shorter than your desired length. Finish with two rows of Tunisian Purl Stitch and bind off as directed.
Keep in mind that a larger blanket will require more yarn and a Tunisian crochet hook or hook-and-cable combination long enough to accommodate your stitches.
You can also experiment with different color combinations to create a baby blanket, lap blanket, or throw that matches your style.
Tunisian Crochet Blanket Edging
With the right side of your blanket facing up, you’ll add an edging along each side to match the top and bottom borders already worked.
Using the smaller 8 mm Tunisian crochet hook and CA, pull up a loop at the end of each row along one side of the blanket.
Work a basic return pass.
Edging Rows 1–2: Tps across.
Bind off in Tss. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Repeat the edging instructions along the opposite side of the blanket.
Block the finished blanket if desired to help even out the stitches and smooth the edges. For tips, see my How to Block Knit and Crochet Items tutorial.
