Aubrieta Bloom Afghan Square Crochet Pattern

This free Aubrieta Bloom afghan square crochet pattern creates a 12-inch floral motif with purple cluster-stitch blossoms, green leaf-like details, and a cream border. The square is worked from the center outward in 13 joined rounds using four colors of worsted- or Aran-weight yarn.

The Aubrieta Bloom Square was the first floral motif I designed for my English Garden afghan. It coordinates with the Daisy Afghan Square and Dahlia Bloom Afghan Square, allowing you to combine several flower designs in one garden-inspired blanket.

The written pattern can be a little detailed, so I have also included a complete crochet stitch diagram below for anyone who prefers following a visual pattern.

Pattern Notes

• The square is worked from the center outward in joined rounds.
• Do not turn after completing a round.
• The beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
• In Round 2, the beginning ch-3 and following 2tr-cl form the first 3tr-cl.
• In Round 5, the beginning ch-2 and following 2dc-cl form the first 3dc-cl.
• The beginning ch-3 counts as the first dc in Rounds 7 and 8.
• Fasten off after each color section and join the next color where instructed.
• Stitch counts do not include chain spaces unless otherwise stated.
• The square finishes with 140 sc around the outer edge.
• Your finished measurements may vary depending on your yarn, hook, tension, and blocking.

Special Stitches

2 double crochet cluster (2dc-cl): Yo, insert the hook into the indicated st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on the hook. Yo, insert the hook into the same st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops. Yo and pull through all 3 loops remaining on the hook.

3 double crochet cluster (3dc-cl): Yo, insert the hook into the indicated st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on the hook. *Yo, insert the hook into the same st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops; rep from * once more. Yo and pull through all 4 loops remaining on the hook.

2 treble crochet cluster (2tr-cl): Yo twice, insert the hook into the indicated st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops twice. Yo twice, insert the hook into the same st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops twice. Yo and pull through all 3 loops remaining on the hook.

3 triple crochet cluster (3tr-cl): Yo twice, insert the hook into the indicated st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops twice. *Yo twice, insert the hook into the same st or sp, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops twice; rep from * once more. Yo and pull through all 4 loops remaining on the hook.

Aubrieta Bloom Afghan Square Instructions

With CA, make a magic ring.

As an alternative, ch 4 and join with a sl st in the farthest ch from the hook to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 8 sc in the ring, and join in the first sc — 8 sc.

Round 2: Ch 3 and work a 2tr-cl in the same st as the join; together, the beginning ch-3 and 2tr-cl form the first 3tr-cl. Ch 4, work 1 sc in the next st, and ch 4. *Work a 3tr-cl in the next st, ch 4, work 1 sc in the next st, and ch 4; rep from * around. Join in the top of the first cluster — 4 3tr-cl, 4 sc, and 8 ch-4 sps.

Round 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 1 sc in the same st as the join, ch 4, work 1 sc in the next sc, and ch 4. *Work 1 sc in the top of the next cluster, ch 4, work 1 sc in the next sc, and ch 4; rep from * around. Join in the first sc — 8 sc and 8 ch-4 sps.

Round 4: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 1 sc in the same st as the join, ch 5. *Work 1 sc in the next sc, ch 5; rep from * around. Join in the first sc and fasten off CA — 8 sc and 8 ch-5 sps.

Round 5: Join CB in the same st as the join. Ch 2 and work a 2dc-cl in the same st; together, the beginning ch-2 and 2dc-cl form the first 3dc-cl. Ch 3 and work a 3dc-cl in the same st, ch 4, work 1 sc in the next ch-5 sp, ch 3, work a 3dc-cl in the next sc, ch 3, work 1 sc in the next ch-5 sp, and ch 4.

*Work [3dc-cl, ch 3, 3dc-cl] in the next sc, ch 4, work 1 sc in the next ch-5 sp, ch 3, work a 3dc-cl in the next sc, ch 3, work 1 sc in the next ch-5 sp, and ch 4; rep from * around.

Join in the first cluster — 12 clusters and 8 sc.

Round 6: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 1 sc in the same st as the join, 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp, 1 sc in the next cluster, ch 4, 1 sc in the next sc, ch 3, 1 sc in the top of the next cluster, ch 3, 1 sc in the next sc, and ch 4.

*Work 1 sc in the top of the next cluster, 3 sc in the next ch-3 sp, 1 sc in the next cluster, ch 4, 1 sc in the next sc, ch 3, 1 sc in the top of the next cluster, ch 3, 1 sc in the next sc, and ch 4; rep from * around.

Join in the first sc and fasten off CB — 32 sc.

Round 7: Join CC in the same st as the join. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), work 1 dc in the next st, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 3 dc in the next ch-4 sp, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, 1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, and 3 dc in the next ch-4 sp.

*Work 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 3 dc in the next ch-4 sp, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, 1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next ch-3 sp, and 3 dc in the next ch-4 sp; rep from * around.

Join in the top of the beginning ch-3 and fasten off CC — 76 dc and 4 ch-2 corner sps.

Round 8: Join CD in the same st as the join. Ch 3 (counts as the first dc). *Work 1 dc in each st across to the next corner ch-2 sp, then work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the corner sp; rep from * around. Join in the top of the beginning ch-3 and fasten off CD — 92 dc and 4 ch-2 corner sps.

Round 9: Join CA in the same st as the join. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 1 sc in the same st, ch 1, and sk the next st. *Work 1 sc in the next st, ch 1, and sk the next st; rep from * to the corner ch-2 sp. Work [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] in the corner sp, ch 1, and sk the next st. Continue repeating the established pattern around. Join in the first sc and fasten off CA — 52 sc and 52 ch-1 sps.

Round 10: Join CB with a sl st in the next ch-1 sp. Ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 1 sc in the same ch-1 sp, ch 1, and sk the next st. *Work 1 sc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, and sk the next st; rep from * to the corner ch-1 sp. Work [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] in the corner sp, ch 1, and sk the next st. Continue repeating the established pattern around. Join in the first sc and fasten off CB — 56 sc and 56 ch-1 sps.

Round 11: Join CC with a sl st in the next ch-1 sp. Ch 2 and work a 2dc-cl in the same ch-1 sp; together, the beginning ch-2 and 2dc-cl form the first cluster. Ch 1 and sk the next st. *Work a 3dc-cl in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, and sk the next st; rep from * to the corner ch-1 sp. Work [3dc-cl, ch 3, 3dc-cl] in the corner sp, ch 1, and sk the next st. Continue repeating the established pattern around. Join in the first cluster and fasten off CC — 60 clusters and 60 ch-sps.

Round 12: Join CD in the same st as the join. Ch 1 (does not count as a st). *Work 2 sc in each ch-1 sp across to the corner, then work 5 sc in the corner ch-3 sp; rep from * around. Join in the first sc — 132 sc.

Round 13: Ch 1 (does not count as a st). *Work 1 sc in each st across to the center sc of the next 5-sc corner, work 3 sc in the center corner sc; rep from * around. Join in the first sc — 140 sc.

Fasten off. For the neatest finish, use the Invisible Join and Fasten-Off Method.

Weave in all the yarn ends securely.

Blocking the Finished Square

Gently block the square to approximately 12 × 12 in. (30.5 × 30.5 cm), arranging the flower and outer edges evenly.
