This easy crochet dishcloth pattern is worked from the center out to create a simple square design with colorful stripes. Unlike most dishcloth patterns that are worked back and forth in rows, this one grows outward in rounds, similar to the construction of a granny square.
The Seeing Squares Crochet Dishcloth uses basic single crochet stitches and simple increases to form the corners. Add a few contrasting colors for the striped geometric design shown here, or use one color for a simpler look.

Seeing Squares Crochet Dishcloth Pattern
With CA, make a magic ring. Alternatively, ch 4 and join with a sl st in the furthest chain from the hook to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, join — 8 sts.
Round 2: Ch 1, work 3 sc in first st, 1 sc in next, *3 sc in next, 1 sc in next, rep from * twice more, join — 16 sts.
Round 3: Join CB, ch 1, work 1 sc in first sc, *3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, rep from * twice more, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, join — 24 sts.
Round 4: Join CA, ch 1, work 1 sc in each of the first 2 sc, *3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, rep from * twice more, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, join — 32 sts.
Round 5: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each of the first 3 sc, *3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sts, rep from * twice more, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, join — 40 sts.
Round 6: Join CC, ch 1, work 1 sc in each of the first 4 sc, *3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 9 sts, rep from * twice more, 3 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts, join — 48 sts.

I’m new at crocheting and I’m not sure what Join CC or Join CB mean?? Can you explain this please.

I’m confused on the seeing squares pattern. Is the magic circle 8 stitches? The starting instructions say make a magic ring, or chain 4 and join. Then round 1 is 8 sc in the magic ring. So, is the magic ring 4 loops, then 2sc in each loop for Round 1? Or is the magic ring the Round 1 instruction, i.e. 8 loops, join, then ch1? Love this pattern but so confused!?!??

I’m working my way through these patterns as some of my first crochet projects. I should’ve asked for your join method before starting this one (or maybe the issue is *where* I joined?)… I didn’t notice until I was done that the rows where I joined are all askew–the stripes don’t line up. Ha! I still like it.
You should make your join in the first stitch of that round … but make sure you do not work in the join at the end of your next round or else you will be adding stitches.
I’ve taken the yarn out to redo several times but with each round I keep counting more stitches than specified – 33 sts (or 32, not counting the first chain) Round 4 where it is supposed to have 32 sts, and 42 sts (or 41) for Round 5, with supposedly 40 sts, etc. By Round 6, I’m off by several sts and it’s obvious that I didn’t reach the sl st of the previous round. The cloth is coming up as sort of like square but the fabric does not sit flat, kind of wavy. I really like this pattern and I would like some help!

I love the Seeing Squares texture and would like to make place cloths with that pattern, using a heavier yarn. Could you tell me how to convert the shape from square to rectangle?
Hi Lisa 🙂 It would take some time for me to rework up the pattern to make them into place mats, but essentially, you just add more stitches to two of the sides and work the corners as for the dishcloth.
My seeing squares ends up askew – I have also taken it out several times and can’t seem to get it . . . any ideas? I can send a pic somehow. I have done the others, though, with great success!
My seeing square ones end up not being as square as yours and have a round shape. I have pulled it out time and time again but still can’t seem to see what I am doing wrong. Any tips?

Finished the textured one yesterday. Love it. Would you say for different sized projects that I could chain multiples of 2 + 1?
Also working on Seeing Squares. Had to turn & work in the other direction after several rounds. I’m a tight crocheter & projects like this tend to go slightly askew. But I do love the pattern.
