This free Star of Bethlehem crochet pattern creates an elegant eight-pointed star using Size 10 metallic crochet thread. One elongated point gives the finished star its traditional Bethlehem-star shape, while blocking and stiffening help each delicate point hold its form.
The finished crochet star measures approximately 5 × 4 in. (12.7 × 10.2 cm). Add a hanging loop to use it as a Christmas tree ornament, place it above a Nativity display, attach it to a wrapped gift, or give it as a meaningful handmade keepsake.

Pattern Notes
- The star begins with a center ring and one foundation round.
- Each point is made by chaining outward, working back along the chain, and anchoring the point to the foundation round.
- Keep the right side of the star facing you while working the points.
- The beginning ch-3 counts as the first dc in the foundation round.
- Point 5 is the longest point and forms the lower ray of the Star of Bethlehem.
- The finished star should be blocked and stiffened so the points hold their shape.
- Finished measurements may vary depending on your thread, hook, tension, blocking, and stiffening.

Blocking and Stiffening the Crochet Star
Cover a flat piece of foam board or thick cardboard with wax paper and secure the wax paper with tape.
Place the star right-side down on the prepared surface. Position the longest point at the bottom, then use rustproof pins to straighten and shape all eight points.
Apply a thin coat of fabric stiffener with a small paintbrush, following the directions on the product. Allow the star to dry completely before removing the pins.

To turn the finished star into an ornament, thread a piece of crochet thread through one of the upper points and knot the ends together to form a hanging loop. Omit the loop if you plan to display the star above a Nativity scene.
