Brighten up your desk with this free crochet mason jar cozy pattern! Using a little leftover worsted-weight yarn, you can turn ordinary mason jars into colorful holders for pens, pencils, and other small desk supplies.
I was feeling the winter blahs and needed a little color around me to keep me smiling. So I pulled out some scrap yarn and crocheted a few cheerful cozies for the mason jars I use to organize my desk. And guess what … they did the trick!
These easy crochet jar covers are a fun way to use up yarn scraps, and you can customize them with stripes, different stitch patterns, or a simple crochet flower.
I’ve included instructions for my striped mason jar cozy, a small flower embellishment, and ideas for making a stitch sampler version.

- sl st = slip stitch
- st(s) = stitch(es)
This pattern is written in U.S. crochet terms.
Special Stitch: Reverse Single Crochet
Reverse single crochet (also called crab stitch) is worked from left to right for right-handed crocheters, instead of the usual right-to-left direction. It creates a decorative, twisted-looking edge.
Pattern Notes
- The pattern is written for a pint-size mason jar, but you can adjust the starting chain to fit your jar.
- Work the cozy flat, then sew the short ends together around the jar.
- Check the width of your first row against the circumference of your jar, allowing enough room to sew the ends together.
- Change yarn colors after each row or as desired to create stripes.
- Add or subtract rows to adjust the height of your cozy.
- The beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
- Stitch counts are based on the 36-chain starting foundation and will vary if you adjust the width.

Striped Mason Jar Cozy Instructions
Foundation chain: Ch 36, or the number of chains needed to fit around your jar.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn — 35 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in each st across, turn — 35 sts.
Rows 3–17: Repeat Row 2, changing colors as desired, until the piece is tall enough to cover your jar. Do not turn after the final row.
Row 18: Do not turn. Ch 1, work 1 rev sc in each st back across the row just worked — 35 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a tail approximately 10 in. (25 cm) long.
Wrap the crocheted piece around the mason jar and use a tapestry needle and the yarn tail to sew the short ends together. Weave in the remaining ends.
Crochet Flower Embellishment
Make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, *work 1 sc in ring, ch 3; rep from * 4 more times, join — 5 ch-3 loop petals.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Use the yarn tail to attach the flower to your mason jar cozy.
Stitch Sampler Mason Jar Cozy
Want to experiment with different crochet stitches? Try making a sampler-style mason jar cozy!
Start with a foundation chain long enough to fit around your jar, adjusting the number of chains as needed for your chosen stitch patterns. Work the first row in single crochet as in the striped cozy pattern above.
Work different stitch patterns as you build up the height of your cozy. It’s a fun opportunity to learn new stitches or practice techniques you’ve been wanting to perfect.
Once your piece is tall enough, fasten off and sew the short ends together around your jar.

Hi:
I would like to know where the pattern is for the other mason jar crochet cozy in the picture? I like the one with all the different stitches. It is not there when I click on the pattern.
Thanks,

Hi Kara, Do you have the pattern to the sampler mason jar cozy? I know it says to pull out a stitch dictionary which I do not have. I love the looks of the one in your picture. Would love to be able to crochet that exact one. It is so cute. Thanks so much!
I Love Your Blog!! You have a great talent for crochet design & thank you for sharing it. Can’t wait to make this jar cozy! I’m feeling the winter blahs myself & the bright “spring” colors on your cozies helped me remember spring is on its way (sooner or later, lol). It will make a good Easter gift for some of my coworkers. Thanks again for sharing & happy crocheting!!
Wow, these are so fun! I love these springy colors here in the dead of winter! Well done, Kara!
The color scheme in this project is lovely!
Love this so much,. thank you!!!
Thank you for solving my dilemma over what to do with the wide-mouth jam jar whose ring-and-cap cover was finally too rusted to keep.
Lol! Glad to help 🙂
Wonderful happy colors for a blah winter’s day! Just what I needed to see. Very cute Kara, thank you!
Thank you, Astri!
How do you work a reverse single crochet? I know that sounds silly, but i honestly have no clue. Thanks 🙂
Hi Linda 🙂 it is just a single crochet worked in the opposite direction as you usually work, although it can be a little awkward to do at first. Perhaps check to see I there is a how to video on YouTube.
very cute ,Thank you for lovely pattern .
My pleasure! Thank you for stopping by 🙂
Good Day!
I’m new to your blog. I’ve been lurking for about 2-weeks now. I wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying your blog and your lovely patterns.
I’ve already printed off a few patterns that I want to try. I’m self-taught and not experienced with reading patterns. I can, however, understand most yours!
Do you have a tutorial for crocheting in a circle? (or is it call round?) I just HAVE to try these jar cozies. My granddaughter would go crazy over these. My grandsons will too, but they are too “manly” (so they think) to make a big fuss over things. They are 8 and 9 years old. LOL
Thank you for creating, presenting and sharing such lovely patterns. I look forward to hearing from you about the circle tutorial.
Bobbie 🙂
Hi Bobbie 🙂 I’m so glad you are enjoying my patterns and blog! I don’t have a tutorial for working in the round per se, but you should be able to do it just by following a pattern that is worked that way. I do have a tutorial for making a magic ring that may be a help though. It is under my Crochet Tutorials tab at the top of my page. Hope that helps!
My daughter saw the mason jars and said “please Mom I have to have that jar ,PLEASE, PLEASE!! Of course I told her -yes. As I too am a mason jar fan!!!
How fun! So glad you both like them 🙂
