This free crochet Mobius cowl pattern is a quick and cozy project featuring the same pretty fan-stitch texture as my popular Mobius Infinity Scarf. The cowl is worked in one continuous piece with a 180° twist, creating a seamless loop with a beautiful drape and no sewing required.
With a circumference of about 25 inches, this cowl is a comfortable size for wearing close around the neck. The simple construction makes it easy to customize, and the textured stitch pattern adds just enough interest to make this a fun project for a handmade accessory.

Here is what you will need:
- US H-8 / 5 mm crochet hook
- approx. 250 yd DK or light worsted-weight yarn (shown here in Fyberspates Scrumptious DK)
- stitch marker
- tapestry needle and scissors for finishing

- Gauge: 4 fans and 7 rows = approx. 4 in. Adjust tension or hook size to achieve proper gauge.
Crochet Mobius Cowl Pattern
Working the foundation round of the Mobius cowl is the trickiest part. I have provided photos of each step to help guide you through this part. Please note that the number of stitches used in the photos is much less than noted in the pattern. I did this so that the entire chain and round would be visible, giving you a clearer idea.
Also note that in this pattern, 1 “round” will take you around both the top and bottom of the cowl, so in effect it will be like working 2 rounds.
Crochet Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- beg – beginning
- ch-sp – chain space
- sl st – slip stitch
Ch 100.
Twist chain 180° (see Figure 1) and join with a Sl st in the back of the 1st ch to form a ring (see Figure 2). If desired, place a stitch marker to mark the join.
Foundation Round: Ch 3 (counts as dc), continuing to work in the back side of the chain [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same st as join (see Figure 3; first fan st made), skip 4 ch, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next ch, skip next 4 ch, rep from * around until you reach the join where stitch marker was placed, if used (see Figure 4), do not join or turn.
Working on the opposite side of the chain, [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same chain as 1st fan st made (see Figure 5), skip next 4 ch, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next ch, skip next 4 ch, rep from * around until you reach the join where stitch marker was placed if used (see Figure 6), join in top of beg ch 3 (see Figure 7) — 40 fan sts.
By now, you can see the Mobius twist in your cowl foundation; this is correct (see Figure 8).
Round 1: Sl st in next dc and in ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), work [1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in same ch-sp, [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next ch-sp and each ch-sp around, join in top of beg ch 3 — 40 fan sts.
Rounds 2 through 10: Repeat Round 1.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Crochet Mobius Cowl Dimensions & Customizing the Size
The Mobius infinity cowl pattern is very easy to customize for your perfect fit.
To Make the Cowl Longer
If you would like the cowl to have a slightly larger circumference, increase the beginning chain by 5 chains. For example, instead of chaining 100, you would chain 105, 110, or 115. Each additional 5 chains adds approximately 1¼ in. to the circumference.
To Make the Cowl Wider
To make the cowl wider, simply add extra rounds until you reach your desired width. Keep in mind that each round travels around both sides of the cowl, so each additional round adds approximately 1¾ in. to the width.
To Make the Cowl Shorter
If you would like a shorter cowl, decrease the beginning chain by 5 chains. For example, you could chain 95, 90, or 85. Each decrease of 5 chains will shorten the circumference by approximately 1¼ in.
