I love working up crochet dishcloths, especially in the summer. They’re lightweight enough to be a great take-along project and work up quickly, too. I find such satisfaction in making something pretty and useful in such a small amount of time! Plus, there’s a simple pleasure in washing dishes with a handmade dishcloth.

Easy Crochet Dishcloth Patterns for Beginners

Dishcloths are great for beginner crocheters because they allow for practicing new stitches and stitch combinations. In fact, in my crochet workshops, once I’m done working with students through the Learn to Crochet Series, our first projects are dishcloths. I specifically designed these dishcloths to help my students learn new skills and techniques, including

• learning how to chain stitch, single crochet stitch, half double crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch (ch, sc, hdc, dc)
• counting and identifying stitches, such as back loops/front loops, and first and last stitch in a row or round
• working textured stitch combinations
• changing colors
• working in the round and joining with a slip stitch (sl st)
• creating an edging

Common Questions About Crochet Dishcloths

Do crochet dishcloths work well?

Yes! I find that the texture of the crochet stitches works great for picking up crumbs and such, and that they are gentle enough to use on all surfaces. I would not use them to scrub, though, or you risk tearing the yarn.

What kind of yarn do you use for dishcloths?

100% cotton yarn is best for crochet dishcloths as well as any crochet washcloths.

What size crochet hook is best for dishcloths?

The crochet hook size you would choose is dependent on the weight of the yarn you are using, as well as your individual stitch tension. For the patterns I link to in this post, I used worsted weight cotton yarn (Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton) and a US Size H-8/5.00 mm crochet hook.

Can I use acrylic yarn to crochet dishcloths?

While acrylic yarn will work for crocheting the pattern, it is not very absorbent, so it would not be a good choice for use as dishcloths. Acrylic yarn is great for practicing, though!

How big should a crochet dishcloth be?

There isn’t a set size for a dishcloth. The crochet patterns in this post are designed to measure approximately 8 inches square.

How do you care for crochet dishcloths?

Easy! You can care for your crocheted dishcloths by throwing them right into the laundry with your other kitchen towels.

What supplies do I need to crochet a dishcloth?

For each dishcloth pattern here, I suggest approximately 80–90 yd of worsted-weight cotton yarn per dishcloth, such as Knit Picks Dishie, Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, or Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, a US H-8/5.00 mm hook, a yarn needle/tapestry needle, and scissors. Cotton is the best yarn choice because it is highly absorbent, durable, and machine-washable.

The Textured Stitch dishcloth pattern creates a beautifully textured fabric using just two basic stitches—single crochet and double crochet. Although the stitch pattern looks intricate, it’s surprisingly easy to work, making it a great crochet dishcloth for beginners ready to practice simple stitch combinations.

Seeing Squares Dishcloth

The Seeing Squares Dishcloth pattern is worked from the center outward using three colors of yarn. Working in the round creates the colorful geometric design while giving you practice with color changes and joining rounds.

Crunchy Stitch Dishcloth

The Crunchy Stitch Dishcloth pattern uses a fun, easy stitch to create a great textured design. The pattern uses only two basic stitches, slip stitches and half double crochets, but when used in an alternating sequence, the effect looks much more complex.

Three Color Simple Stitch Dishcloth

The Three Color Simple Stitch Dishcloth pattern features an easy stitch pattern with color changes that give the finished dishcloth a bright and cheery look. It’s a fun project for practicing changing yarn colors while working across a row.
