This Crunchy Stitch crochet dishcloth pattern features a fun, easy stitch that creates a beautifully textured fabric. The pattern uses only two basic stitches—slip stitches and half double crochet—but when worked in an alternating sequence, the effect looks much more complex.
Made with worsted-weight cotton yarn, the finished dishcloth measures approximately 8 inches square. It’s an easy pattern that’s great for practicing simple stitch combinations while making something useful for your kitchen.

Pattern Details
- Skill level: Easy
- Yarn: Worsted-weight cotton
- Yardage: Approximately 80–90 yd
- Hook: 5 mm (US H-8)
- Finished size: Approximately 8 × 8 in. (20 × 20 cm)
- Stitches: Slip stitch and half double crochet
- Construction: Worked flat with an edging

- Approximately 80–90 yd of worsted-weight cotton yarn, such as Lily Sugar ‘n Cream or Lion Brand Cotton
- US H-8 / 5 mm hook
- yarn needle and scissors for finishing

Crunchy Stitch Dishcloth Instructions
Ch 26.
Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, *1 hdc in next ch, sl st in the next ch, rep from * across, turn — 25 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), *sl st in next hdc, 1 hdc in next sl st, rep from * across, turn — 25 sts.
Row 3: *Sl st in hdc, 1 hdc in next sl st, rep from * across, sl st in top of turning ch — 25 sts.
Rows 4 – 25: Rep Rows 2 and 3 for pattern.
Row 26: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), work 1 hdc in each st across, do not turn or fasten off — 25 sts.
Edging
Round 1: Work 2 hdc in the same st as the last hdc of Row 26; continue working a hdc edge around the washcloth along the next 3 sides, working 3 hdc in each corner. Join in the top of the beginning ch of Row 26.
Fasten off, weave in ends.

I would call myself an intermediate crocheter and I actually found this pattern difficult. The stitches themselves are of course not hard at all BUT I had a hard time distinguishing the two types of stitches in the row. Maybe because I was trying to use a two color yarn.
I ended up giving up 🙁
Don’t give up 🙁 I agree, this stitch pattern can be challenging with distinguishing the stitches. My trick when I get confused is to turn my piece over to the previous row to distinguish the stitch and then turn back and continue. Hope that helps 🙂
Can you give me a guesstimate of how many yards are needed for a one of these clothes. I’m ordering yarn for Christmas gifts and don’t want to have to pay shipping twice if I don’t get enough the first time. Thanks so much!
Hi Margery 🙂 I do not know the exact amount per washcloth but I know each one takes much less than a 120 yds ball of Lily Sugar n’ Cream. Hope that helps!

For some reason every time I get to the end of the odd numbered row I’m missing the last stitch so that I can do a slip stitch into it. I know I have the correct number of stitches on each row. Just not sure what I’m missing. I’m a beginner if I didn’t give that away with my problem 😉

I am just loving your Crunchy Stitch Crochet Dishcloth!! I made my first one several days ago and love the texture of it. It absorbs water wonderfully and feels great while using it. Now I find myself addicted to making more in bright pretty colors. I left off the edging tho and love having it just a tad bit smaller. I’ve made several for my daughter and am now thinking of who else I can give these too, lol. Thanks so much for your time and talent by providing these patterns for us. 😉
