This woven potholder crochet pattern puts a fun twist on a classic kitchen essential! Crochet simple strips in your favorite colors, weave them together, and attach them to a solid backing to create a colorful woven design.
The weaving reminds me of those little loom potholders I made as a kid—remember those? I have to say, I enjoyed making this crochet version even more!
I used five bright colors for mine, but there are so many ways you could customize your woven crochet potholder. Try two colors for a simple look, coordinate the colors with your kitchen, or use an assortment of cotton yarn from your stash.
For a potholder or hot pad, 100% cotton yarn is the best choice because it can withstand heat better than synthetic fibers, which can melt when exposed to high temperatures.

And I love how all those bright colors look with the vintage pieces in my kitchen!

Pattern Notes
The woven potholder consists of 16 crocheted strips—eight in CA and two each in CB, CC, CD, and CE—plus a solid crochet backing.
The strips are woven together directly over the backing and then secured around the outside edge.
The beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.
For safety around hot cookware, use 100% cotton yarn rather than acrylic or other synthetic fibers.

Woven Potholder Instructions
Colored Strips
Make 8 with CA.
Make 2 each with CB, CC, CD, and CE.
Ch 25.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn — 24 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, turn — 24 sts.
Row 3: Repeat Row 2.

Solid Backing
With CA, ch 25.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn — 24 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, turn — 24 sts.
Rows 3–28: Repeat Row 2. Turn, but do not fasten off after Row 28.
Arranging and Weaving the Strips
Place the eight CA strips vertically on the solid backing so they lie side by side, with each short edge lined up with the last row of the backing.
With the working yarn from the backing, ch 1. Attach the strips to the backing by working 3 sc across the edge of each strip and through the corresponding 3 sts of the backing. Continue across all eight strips to the corner, working 3 sc in the corner st.
Next, weave the remaining colored strips horizontally through the CA strips.
Beginning with a CB strip, weave under the first vertical strip, over the next, under the next, and continue alternating across.
With a CC strip, begin in the opposite direction: weave over the first vertical strip, under the next, over the next, and continue alternating across.
Continue weaving the CD and CE strips, then repeat the color sequence with the remaining strips. Take care to alternate the over-and-under placement with each new row to create the woven pattern.
Secure the edges of the strips to the backing with locking stitch markers or safety pins if needed.
With the working yarn, continue attaching the colored strips to the backing by working 3 sc across the edge of each strip and through the backing. Continue to the corner and work 3 sc in the corner.
Repeat around the remaining sides. At the final corner, work 2 sc in the same st as the first sc to complete the corner.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

This looks so colourful! Thank you for making this.
This is such a fun potholder! My mom taught me how to do the loom quite some time ago, but never taught me how to take it off the loom. Hehe. This is a good alternative. Perhaps as a gift to her!
What a sweet idea that would be!
