This crochet heart pattern is perfect for to use in your Valentine’s decor or as an applique on clothing, hats, or blankets. I worked up the heart patterns here with worsted weight yarn but you can create so many different effects just by changing up your yarn weight and hook size!
The patterns below include 3 crochet heart sizes, with the small heart being approximately 1½ inches, the medium heart being approximately 2
½ inches, and the large heart being approximately 3½ inches.
Heart Crochet Patterns
Here’s what you need:
- small amounts worsted weight yarn
- US H-8 / 5 mm crochet hook
- yarn needle and scissors for finishing

Add this pattern to your Ravelry library.
Finished sizes: small = approx. 1½ in., medium = approx. 2½ in., large = approx. 3½ in.
Make a magic ring (as an alternative to the magic ring, you can ch 4 and join with a slip stitch in furthest chain from hook to form a ring).
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), working into the ring, work 3 hdc, 3 dc, ch1, Sl st in ring, ch 1, continue working in ring 3 dc, 3 hdc, join and pull tail of yarn to close up ring — 14 sts.
(Makes small heart, continue for medium or large hearts.)
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 dc in next, 3 dc in next, 2 dc in next, ch 2, Sl st in Sl st from previous round, ch 2, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, join — 20 sts. (Makes medium heart, continue for large heart.)
Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same st as join, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, 1 dc in next, 3 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 3 hdc in next, ch 1, Sl st in Sl st from previous round, ch 1, 3 hdc in next, 2 dc in next st, 3 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, join — 31 sts. (Makes large heart.)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Make Each Heart Unique
You can add a unique touch to each crochet heart with these creative variations.
- Do not fully tighten the magic ring to create an open center variation, or if starting with a beginning chain, increase numbers of chains until you get your desired opening.
- Add a picot edging: Join a coordinating color to any st on Round 2, * ch 3, Sl st in furthest ch from hook, sc in next st on Round 2, repeat from * around, join. Fasten off and weave in ends.
- Try making crocheted hearts with a fun novelty yarn like chenille or glitter yarn.
- Keep crocheting and make these adorable hugs and kisses baskets.
- Stack them, string them, sew them together … adorn a hairband, embellish a hat, piece them together for a scarf or table runner … have fun!

Good Afternoon! So adorable. I tried making a small heart. I’m new at crocheting sobthis night be a silly question. I don’t understand the end of the small heart pattern. The instructions say to continue working in ring 3 dc, 3 hdc, join and pull tail of yarn to close up ring. Where do you join the slip stitch to? Inside the magic circle? So sorry if I’m asking a ridiculous question but I’d love to learn how to complete projects without making them crooked or trying to guess what it is! 😃. Thank you for the pattern. It’s super cute! I have tried unsuccessfully for 20 minutes to get the pattern for the Rose Heart Wreath and I can get the pattern for everything else under the sun, but that!!! I’m very frustrated, to say the least! How do I get the pattern?

looking for the pattern to the heart done in roses but can’t find it-can anyone help please??
Came up with a new way to use your heart pattern: I made some in sport weight sock yarn (red of course!) using an F hook, and sewed them on over the elbow holes in a favorite old black sweater. Elbow patches! (I had to make a couple extra rounds to make them big enough – based on your previous rounds increases) I used the tail of the yarn to sew them on. Pretty cute if I do say so – and my dear old sweater gets to last awhile longer!

These are so cute and so simple, thank you for sharing the pattern! My younger daughter is getting into crochet with me and wants to try these too. I am going to experiment with all sorts of Valentine’s Day colors – it will be fun 🙂 Not sure what we are going to use them for yet, but we will figure that out later.
