Ruffle Edged Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

A friend of mine is having a sweet baby girl soon and I wanted to make her something special. Since she only has boys at home I wanted to make her something extra frilly and girly!! And this ruffle edged crochet baby blanket pattern is just what I was thinking!

Ruffle Edged Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Here’s what you need:

• 2 skeins worsted weight yarn (approx. 364 yds each, shown here in Red Heart Super Saver Yarn Perfect Pink – #706)
• 1 skein Red Heart Boutique Sassy Fabric (shown here in Black Dot #9931)
• I-9 / 5.5 mm crochet hook
• scissors and yarn needle

Finished blanket measures approximately 28 in. × 28 in.

With your worsted weight yarn, make a magic ring (as an alternative to the magic ring method, you can ch 4 and join in furthest ch from hook to form a ring.)

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 3, *3 dc in ring, ch 3, repeat from *twice more, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 12 sts.

Round 2: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, ch 1 *[3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, rep from * twice more,  join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 24 sts.

Round 3: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 36 sts.

Round 4: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc , ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more,  ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 48 sts.

Round 5: Sl st in each of the next 2 sts to corner ch-3 sp, work [1 sc, ch 2] in ch-3 sp (counts as first dc), work [2 dc , ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-3 sp, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-3 sp, rep from * twice more,  ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a Sl st in top of beg ch — 60 sts.

Rounds 6 through 19: Continue pattern and color sequence as done in previous rounds, adding an additional repeat of “3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1″ along each side for each round ending with 228 sts, or until desired size (note that you will need additional yarn and fabric if making a larger blanket).

Do not fasten off. Continue with Edging below.

Edging

Since the fabric ruffle might tickle under a baby’s chin, I only worked it around three sides of the blanket, and I worked a crochet edge with the worsted weight yarn along remaining side (see pattern below).

Setup: Continuing with your worsted weight yarn from Round 19 of the blanket pattern above, Sl st in next 2 sts and in each of the 3 ch of corner.

Row 1: Working in back loops only this row, ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 1 hdc in each st and ch across, ending with last st in first ch of corner ch-3 sp, turn (remember we are only crocheting right now across one edge of the blanket) — 77 sts.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 1 hdc in each st across, turn — 77 sts.

Row 3: Working in back loops only again for this row, ch 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in each st across — 77 sts.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

The remaining three sides will be edged with our fabric yarn. Work 1 sc in the back loop only of each st and ch around the remaining three sides.

To single crochet with the fabric, start with first loop of fabric on your hook, *insert hook in back loop of st, pick up next loop from fabric and pull through, pick up next loop of fabric and pull through both loops, repeat from * for remaining sts.

Fasten off and snip excess fabric.
