Heart Granny Square Crochet Pattern
Here’s what you need to work up the Heart Granny Square Crochet Pattern :
- 2 colors worsted weight yarn
- H hook
- tapestry needle, scissors
Helpful Crochet Resources: Refer to my Crochet Abbreviations and U.S. to U.K. Crochet Conversion Chart as you work through the pattern.
Finished size: approx. 4½ in.
Add this pattern to your Ravelry library.
With color A, make a magic ring (as an alternative to the magic ring, you can ch 4 and join with a slip stitch in furthest chain from hook to form a ring).
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), working into the ring, work 3 hdc, 3 dc, ch 1, Sl st in ring, ch 1, continue working in ring 3 dc, 3 hdc, join — 14 sts (not counting chains).
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, 3 dc in next, ch 1, Sl st in Sl st from previous round, ch 1, 3 dc in next st, 2 dc in next, 1 dc in next, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, join — 20 sts (not counting chains).
Round 3: Working in front loops only, Sl st in each st around, join and fasten off — 20 sts.
Round 4: Join Color B in back loop of the first st after join, ch 2 (counts as hdc), working in back loops only this round, work [1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc] in next st (1st corner made), 1 hdc in next st, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, [1 hdc, ch 3, 1 hdc] in next st (2nd corner made), 1 hdc in next, ch 2, skip next 2 sts (as well as the Sl st between them), 1 hdc in next, [1 hdc, ch 3, 1 hdc] in next st (3rd corner made), 1 hdc in next, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, [1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc] in next st (last corner made), 1 hdc in next st, ch 2, join in top of beg ch — 16 sts and 8 ch-sps.
Round 5: Sl st in next st and in ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), work [2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in same ch-sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 2, *[3dc, ch3, 3 dc] in next ch-sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 2, rep from *twice more, join in top of beg ch — 36 sts and 12 ch-sps.
Round 6: ch 1 (d0es not count as st), work 1 sc in same st as join and each of the next 2 sts, 3 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in ch-sp, *1 sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in ch-sp, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in ch-sp, rep from *twice more, join — 64 sts.

I’ve tried several times but the pattern doesn’t work. The bottom part of the heart remains smaller when the square is finished. I’m so sorry, it looked very nice in your photos.
I had to click on this (I found it on Pinterest of course) just to see why it was blocked. And HOW it was blocked. Using a child’s puzzle play piece (the kind you put on the floor for them, in case anyone hasn’t see them — they build the puzzle on the floor and it is a cushy place to play — until I had a granddaughter, I’d never seen one!) is BRILLIANT. When my granddaughter isn’t here, her blocks will be put to good use.
Other than that, this is a darling idea, and I shall do this for ALL my granddaughters — three of them. I wanted to make a poncho for them, and this is just what is needed for the bottom! Thanks!
Thank you for pointing out the cushy puzzle piece. I missed it completely in my excitement over the pattern itself. My kiddos just started college, so no little ones to borrow from, but I’ll keep my eye open for one at a thrift store. Cleverness right there!
I love this heart granny square i just cant get it right 🙁
on round 3 when working in the front loops only what do i do when i get to the middle of the heart because mine ends up looking like a petal/kidney and nothing like a heart 🙁 ive crocheted amigurumi monsters,hats and gloves for my boys,afew granny squares,african flowers but this is driving me nuts.i even checked the pattern to see if i had printed it before you edited the pattern its just not working out right 🙁 Any chance of a photo turorial? or vid? or chart? this pattern is beating me i had great ideas for it 🙁

So when you are squaring things off, you start off with a dc, ch 3, and then switch to idc ch3…which is it?
