Easy Boomerang Shawl Knitting Pattern

This easy boomerang shawl knitting pattern is worked in a simple two-row garter stitch repeat, making it a relaxing project for newer knitters and experienced knitters alike. The curved boomerang shape drapes beautifully around the shoulders and can also be worn wrapped around the neck like a scarf.

I used Manos del Uruguay Feliz, a colorful sport-weight yarn that really shows off the simple garter stitch pattern. Because the shawl is worked entirely in garter stitch, it’s also reversible and looks great from either side.

The finished shawl measures approximately 62 inches (157 cm) across × 16 inches (41 cm) deep after blocking, but you can easily continue knitting to make yours larger. I’ve also included a video tutorial below showing you how to work the stitches and techniques used in the pattern.

Pattern Details

• Yarn: Sport-weight yarn
• Yardage: Approximately 700 yd (640 m)
• Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) 40-in. circular knitting needles
• Gauge: 21 sts = 4 in. (10 cm)
• Finished size: Approximately 62 in. (157 cm) across × 16 in. (41 cm) deep, blocked
• Construction: Worked flat in garter stitch with increases and decreases to create a curved boomerang shape
• Stitch pattern: 2-row repeat
• Adjustable sizing: Continue repeating Rows 3 and 4 until the shawl reaches your desired size

• 2 hanks sport weight yarn, approx. 350 yd (320 m), shown here in Manos Del Uruguay Feliz in the Grizzly colorway
• US 5 / 3.75 mm 40-in. circular knitting needles
• Stitch markers
• Scissors and yarn needle for finishing

Abbreviations

• k – knit
• k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
• kfbf – knit into the front, back, and front of the same stitch
• sl1wyf – slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front
• st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern Notes

• The first stitch of each row is slipped to give a nice finished edge.
• The shaping is done on the odd-numbered rows. It may be helpful to place a stitch marker on the right side of your piece to remind you to make the increases and decreases.
• Keep knitting until the wingspan measures 62 inches across or until you reach your desired size. You measure from the cast-on tip to the first stitch of an odd-numbered (right side) row.
• The bind-off edge spans from the top left corner to the bottom point of the shawl (see figure below).

Boomerang Shawl Knitting Instructions

Cast on 5 sts.

Row 1: Sl1wyf, kfbf, k2tog, k1 – 6 sts.

Row 2: Sl1wyf, k across – 6 sts.

Row 3: Sl1wyf, kfbf, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 7 sts.

Row 4: Sl1wyf, k across – 7 sts.

Row 5 and on: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until shawl measures 62 inches (157 cm) across or until your desired size is reached.

Finishing and Blocking
