Jute Crochet Placemats Pattern
Here’s what you will need:
- US N/P-15 10 mm hook
- 3-ply jute cord (approx. 65 yds per placemat)
- scissors

Add this pattern to your Ravelry library.
Finished placemats measure approximately 12 in. diameter.
Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join to make a ring).
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), ch 1, *work 1 dc in ring, ch 1, rep from * 6 more times, join in top of beginning ch — 8 dc and 8 ch-sp.
Round 2: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, work 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 16 dc and 8 ch-sp.
Round 3: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 24 dc and 16 ch-sp.
Round 4: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 32 dc and 16 ch-sp.
Round 5: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 40 dc and 24 ch-sp.
Round 6: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 48 dc and 24 ch-sp.
Round 7: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 56 dc and 32 ch-sp.
Round 8: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in same ch-sp, 5 dc in next ch-sp, *1 sc in next ch-sp, 5 dc in next ch-sp, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 96 sts.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
I have made the placemat, but had to use a “L” hook to achieve the 12″ diameter, as using the “P” it measures 14″. Just was wondering, I purchased the Jute from Michael’s Craft Store and it has a chemical smell. This is my first time using Jute for crocheting … is this normal and if so how do I get the smell out. Is it toxic?

Is there a particular diameter or thickness for the jute cord other than 3ply? When I look at the picture of yours it looks pretty thick (which I like) but some of the 3ply jute I find is pretty skinny looking. Is there a difference between jute cord and jute twine? Any chance you’ll do a video tutorial?? Placemats are beautiful!
Hi Amanda 🙂 I don’t see any other designation on my cord package except the 3 ply. It isn’t very thick, probably the same thickness as chunky yarn. Hope that helps!
YES, THIS! lol I am doing now with 3ply, and it is THIN – not the size of chunky yarn at all… perhaps if I doubled it it would be. I am thinking they won’t turn out the same at all.
The 3ply is a different element than thickness. The ply is how many strands are wrapped together. This looks like a 3mm thickness at least.
I have tried this about a dozen times, and my stitches keep getting off at the end of the third round. I think there’s a mistake at the start of the third round, which is why I keep getting an inaccurate stitch count and everything turns into a disaster. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong or what could be wrong in round 3. 🙁
Hi Sammie 🙂 I am sorry you are having trouble. I have checked over Round 3 and can’t spot an error on my end. Is the stitch diagram helpful to you for seeing the placement of the stitches?

I love this pattern, can I make this with a smaller hook and still get to 12 in. I tried a 6.5 but only got to 10. I am new to crochet only since Jan. but retired so I have the time and I really like it. I also like making things for my home.
It would be hard to get the same size with a smaller hook with the pattern as written. You can however add additional increase rounds to increase the size. Hope that helps!

How much jute do you need to make a set of 4 place mats?
Multiply 65 yards by 4… 65 x 4 = 260 yards. If you click on the link for the spool of jute above, you’ll need to order 2 spools, since those spools are only 200 yards each.
The spool’s at Amazon (where the link takes us), are 200 FEET, not yards. So each spool is only 66.6 yards. We need one spool for each placemat. Which still isn’t bad, it’s less than $3.00 a placemat. I’m ordering from the link to support the blog. Thanks for sharing the pattern!
