Crochet Centerpiece – Crochet Ball Pattern Included

Mother’s Day is coming, and I want a bright and cheery centerpiece to adorn my dining table … something colorful and perfect to keep on the table for Spring and Summer. Why not a crocheted centerpiece! I had an idea … so, off to the local yarn shop I went. After a little brainstorming and experimentation, I finally came up with something I love!!

How to make the Crochet Centerpiece

Here’s what you’ll need:

• worsted weight cotton yarn (shown here in Lily Sugar ‘n Cream)
• US G-6 / 4 mm crochet hook
• fiberfill stuffing
• tapestry needle and scissors
• a wide vase
• a smaller cup that is the same height as the vase (I used a water bottle that I cut down to size)
• flowers (hint, hint, honey!)

Before beginning, do a quick calculation to determine the maximum ball size that will fit in your centerpiece. Subtract the diameter of the small cup from the diameter of your vase, then divide by two. This will be the maximum size ball that will fit.  Use a smaller hook size or adjust your stitch tension if necessary to achieve proper size. 

First, crochet up some balls from the patterns below.

To make your centerpiece, place the small cup inside the vase and fill in the space outside the small cup with your crocheted balls.

Then, carefully add water to the center cup and add flowers.

Voila!!

Finished balls measure approximately 1¼ in. and ¾ in.

Large Ball Pattern

Ch 2.

Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join, continue working rounds in a spiral — 6 sts.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around — 12 sts.

Round 3: *2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next, rep from * around — 18 sts.

Rounds 4 through 6: 1 sc in each st around — 18 sts.

Round 7: *sc2tog, 1 sc in next, rep from * around — 12 sts.

Round 8: sc2tog around — 6 sts.

Fasten off, leaving approx. a 6-in. tail. Fill ball with stuffing. Using a tapestry needle, use tail to weave Round 8 closed.

Small Ball Pattern

Ch 2.

Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join, continue working rounds in a spiral — 6 sts.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around — 12 sts.

Rounds 3 and 4: 1 sc in each st around — 12 sts.

Round 5: sc2tog around — 6 sts.

Fasten off, leaving approx. a 6-in. tail. Fill ball with stuffing. Using a tapestry needle, use the tail to weave Round 5 closed.
