This hexagon crochet blanket pattern is such a fun project if you love playing with color! The blanket is made from simple crochet hexagons that are joined together and finished with a coordinating border. I made mine into one large hexagon, but you can arrange the motifs to create a rectangular blanket or just about any size or shape you like.
It’s been such a fun and colorful journey designing this blanket, and I am so glad I got to share the process with you all. I absolutely love how it came together! I’ve gathered all the patterns and tutorials you’ll need in one easy-to-find place so you can make one too.
One of my favorite things about crocheting this hexagon afghan was getting to play with different color combinations. I chose a palette of greens, reddish browns, and blues. I was afraid it would be too busy, but I love how the colors complement each other. I included the specific color names and links in the materials list below in case you would like to use a similar color scheme.
I also think this pattern would look beautiful in a more monochromatic color palette. The creative options are endless!

How to Make a Hexagon Crochet Blanket
Notes:
- With the yarn requirements above, I made 217 full granny hexagons.
- You can arrange the hexagons into a rectangular afghan or any shape or size blanket you like… think lap blanket, baby blanket, or bedspread!
- I thought it would be fun to make a large hexagon afghan out of hexagons! My finished blanket measured approximately 70 in. × 70 in. (178 × 178 cm) in a hexagon shape
Make the Crochet Hexagons
Start by making the hexagon motifs for your blanket using my granny hexagon crochet pattern. Each hexagon is worked in double crochet for three rounds, changing colors after each round.
The fourth round creates the edging around each motif. I chose to join my pieces while working this round using the Join-As-You-Go (JAYGO) method, which I’ll explain more below.
Make the Half Hexagons
When laying out your hexagons before assembling the blanket, you’ll notice some large half-hexagon-shaped valleys between the full hexagons. You can create a straight edge along those sides of your afghan by crocheting some half hexagons to fill in those spaces. Don’t worry about the smaller peaks and valleys along the perpendicular edges right now … we will fill them in with our edging pattern as described below.
Join the Hexagons
As I mentioned above, since I already have a bunch of rectangular afghans, I thought it would be neat to make my hexagon afghan into the shape of a large hexagon (fun!). You can do this too or join them in any shape you’d like. I joined the hexagons using the Join As You Go (JAYGO) Method. In the JAYGO method, you join the hexagons while working the final round of the motif pattern … not only is it easy, but it also creates this beautiful design between your motifs! If you prefer a more invisible join, you can work the final round of the motif for each hexagon and then instead use this slip stitch joining method.
Add the Crochet Blanket Border
Once all your hexagons are joined together, you’re ready to add the border. I designed this granny-style edging specifically for the blanket so it fills in the small valleys between the hexagons and creates a prettier, straighter edge.
For my blanket, I used cream along with the three colors from my blue palette. You can follow my Granny Hexagon Crochet Edging Tutorial for the complete step-by-step instructions and stitch diagram.

Gorgeous, thank you so much for sharing!! I’m currently using the pattern to make a baby blanket. Do you have any pictures of the full finished Afghan? I’d love to see what it looks like at a distance.
I will have to look through my photos and see if I saved any. I had such a hard time getting a nice shot of the whole thing without having it spread out all over my floor 🙂
Supercute!!

I am in love with this just as it is and would love to know what yarn brand and colors are used. Thank you!
Beautiful! Thank you for the lovely tutorial. It is the edging of the hexagon afghan which is tricky. Love your idea of filling the gaps. Lovely colors. 🙂
