Jute Crochet Placemats Pattern
Here’s what you will need:
- US N/P-15 10 mm hook
- 3-ply jute cord (approx. 65 yds per placemat)
- scissors

Add this pattern to your Ravelry library.
Finished placemats measure approximately 12 in. diameter.
Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and join to make a ring).
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), ch 1, *work 1 dc in ring, ch 1, rep from * 6 more times, join in top of beginning ch — 8 dc and 8 ch-sp.
Round 2: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, work 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 16 dc and 8 ch-sp.
Round 3: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 24 dc and 16 ch-sp.
Round 4: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 32 dc and 16 ch-sp.
Round 5: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 40 dc and 24 ch-sp.
Round 6: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *2 dc next ch-sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 48 dc and 24 ch-sp.
Round 7: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, skip next dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 56 dc and 32 ch-sp.
Round 8: Sl st in next dc and next ch-sp, ch 1 (does not count as st), work 1 sc in same ch-sp, 5 dc in next ch-sp, *1 sc in next ch-sp, 5 dc in next ch-sp, rep from * around, join in top of beginning ch — 96 sts.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Hello! If I make this pattern with Sugar ‘n Cream size 4 cotton yarn would I use two strands to get it to a comparable size as the jute yarn used? I really love the pattern but would prefer it be cotton yarn.

Thank you! The diagram is genius. I always find it hard to follow patterns and get lost in circles 🙂 I made this with a cotton blend I had and it makes for a great doily effect. It looks like your jute was probably 3mm 3ply (rather than 2mm which I think some folks may be using). Though I could have kept on increasing in rows to get my mat larger for plate size I actually liked the slightly smaller effect for desert plates or putting on another colored mat for a two mat effect. Anyway. Thanks so much I always appreciate having a great pattern to mess around with and learn from!

I am having problems understanding round 1 where it says to”8 dc and 8 ch-sp”. Note: I am new to crocheting and really want to make these placemats.
I believe it means 8 double crochet 8 chain space so you double crochet and then chain one 8 times around the circle.
After learning how to crochet basic stitches, this was my first real completed project! It looks gorgeous. Thank you!

Hello! I have been working on this for some time, doing and undoing because it doesn’t look as thick as yours.
But I have just notice the US to UK conversation chart and come across the double stitch/Treble difference (I’m new to crochet). So here is my question: how many times you yarn over before a double stitch in your pattern? Thanks
