This pom-pom topiary is such a fun and easy yarn craft! Made with a fluffy yarn pom-pom, a twine-wrapped dowel, and a small flower pot, it’s a cute little decoration that’s perfect for using up leftover yarn.
I originally shared this project on my friend Kadie’s blog, Seven Alive, as part of her Kids Craft Week, and I loved how it turned out so much that I wanted to share it here, too!
This is a great project to make with kids, especially if they enjoy choosing colors and making pom-poms. Adults can help with the hot glue gun and assembly.
You can make your pom-pom topiary in a single color or mix several yarn colors for a bright, playful look. Mine reminds me a little of the whimsical trees in The Lorax movie!
How to Make a Pom-Pom Topiary
Project Details
- Skill level: Easy
- Craft: Yarn craft / pom-pom making
- Finished size: Varies depending on the flower pot and dowel used
- Construction: A large yarn pom-pom is attached to a twine-wrapped dowel and secured in a small flower pot
Materials
- A few small balls of yarn in your choice of colors, or one ball for a solid-colored pom-pom
- Jute twine or cording
- Wooden dowel or sturdy craft sticks
- Extra-large pom-pom maker, approximately 4½ in. (11.5 cm) in diameter
- Small flower pot
- Styrofoam or floral foam to fit inside the pot
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
Pom-Pom Topiary Instructions
Step 1: Make the Yarn Pom-Pom
Begin by making a large yarn pom-pom according to the instructions for your pom-pom maker.
Use one color for a simple look, or combine several colors to create a fun, multicolored pom-pom.
Step 2: Wrap the Wooden Dowel
Add a small drop of hot glue near one end of your wooden dowel and press the end of the twine into the glue.
Begin wrapping the twine around the dowel, keeping the wraps close together so the wood is completely covered.
Continue wrapping until you reach the opposite end. Add another small drop of glue to secure the twine in place.
Step 3: Attach the Pom-Pom
Add a dab of hot glue to the tip of the wrapped dowel.
Carefully insert the dowel into the center of your yarn pom-pom and hold it in place for a few moments while the glue sets.
Step 4: Place the Topiary in the Flower Pot
Cut a piece of Styrofoam or floral foam to fit snugly inside your flower pot.
Insert the bottom end of the dowel into the foam, making sure it stands securely.
Adjust the pom-pom if needed so your topiary stands straight.
And voilà! Your handmade pom-pom topiary is finished!
