These easy yarn ghosts are a quick and fun Halloween craft you can make with just yarn and a few basic craft supplies. They’re essentially simple yarn tassels decorated with little ghost faces, making them an easy project for kids and adults alike.
Hang your yarn ghosts from doorknobs or cabinet knobs, use them as Halloween decorations, or make several and string them together to create a cute ghost garland!
You can make them with a tassel maker or simply use a piece of cardboard. If you’ve never made a tassel before, my How to Make Tassels Tutorial will walk you through the basic technique.
How to Make Yarn Ghosts
Project Details
- Skill level: Easy
- Craft: Yarn tassel
- Finished size: Approximately 6 in. (15 cm) tall
- Yarn: Any weight white yarn
- Other supplies: Craft eyes, felt or beads
- Tools: Tassel maker or cardboard, scissors, and glue
- Uses: Halloween decorations, hanging ornaments, or ghost garland
Materials
- White scrap yarn, any weight
- A tassel maker or a piece of cardboard or card stock to make your own
- Scissors
- Your choice of felt, beads, or self-stick craft eyes
- Glue gun
To make your tassel, follow the directions on your tassel maker, or follow the directions in my How to Make Tassels tutorial. If making your own, cut a piece of cardboard or card stock to the size you want your ghosts to be. I wanted mine to be about 6 in. tall, so I cut my cardboard piece to 6 in. high × 3 in. wide (15 cm high × 7.5 cm wide).
Make the Yarn Tassel Ghost Body
Step 1: Cut a piece of yarn approximately 14 in. (36 cm) long and place it widthwise across your tassel maker.
Step 2: Now wrap the yarn around your tassel maker lengthwise over the yarn you just placed across the maker. Keep wrapping until you reach the desired density for your tassel ghost.
Step 3: Go back and grab the piece of yarn you laid across the width of the maker in Step 1 and pull both ends to the top. Knot it tightly at the top to secure. You can then use the tails to make another knot to form a loop for hanging or tuck them into your ghost to hide them.
Step 4: Use scissors to snip through the yarn across the bottom of your maker to free your tassel.
Make the Ghost Head
Step 5: Cut another length of yarn about 14 in. (36 cm) long and wrap it around the head of the tassel, about ½ in. from the top. Wrap a few more times to secure or until you get the look you want. Tightly knot the yarn and tuck the tails into the center of the yarn tassel ghost body to hide them.
Add the Ghost Face
To finish, trim any uneven yarn across the bottom of your ghost. Cut some felt pieces into small circles for eyes or use self-stick craft eyes or beads to decorate your ghosts. If your felt or craft eyes aren’t self-stick, use a tiny bit of craft glue or a glue gun to stick them in place.
