Pretty Picot Crochet Snowflake Pattern

This free crochet snowflake pattern creates a delicate 4 in. (10 cm) snowflake using Size 10 crochet thread. Although the pattern is only five rounds, the alternating points and picot details give it a beautifully intricate appearance.

• beg = beginning
• ch = chain
• dc = double crochet
• hdc = half double crochet
• p = picot
• rep = repeat
• sc = single crochet
• sl st = slip stitch
• sp(s) = space(s)

Special Stitches

Picot (p): Ch 3, work 1 sc in the first ch made.

Triple picot (tr-p): Work 3 picots, then sl st into the base of the first picot made.

Crochet Snowflake Instructions

Ch 5. The first 4 chs count as the first tr, and the remaining ch forms part of the center ring.

Round 1: Work 1 tr in the furthest chain from the hook, ch 3, *2 tr in the same ch as the last stitch was made, ch 3, rep from * 4 more times, join in the top of the beg ch — 12 tr sts.

Round 2: Sl st in next tr, *[1 sc, ch 4, 1 sc] in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, p, ch 1, rep from * 5 more times, join in 1st sc — 6 ch-4 sps.

Round 3: Sl st in next ch-4 sp, ch 4 (counts as tr), [1 tr, ch 3, 2 tr] in same ch-4 sp, ch 3, *[2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr] in next ch-4 sp, ch 3, rep from * 4 more times, join in top of beg ch-4 — 12 ch-3 loops.

Round 4: Sl st in next tr, *[2 sc, p, 2 sc] in next ch-3 sp, ch 7, skip next ch-3 sp, rep from * 5 more times, join in 1st sc — 6 ch-7 sps.

Round 5: *Ch 3, p, ch 3, [1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 tr, tr-p, 1 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc] in next ch-7 sp, rep from * 5 more times, sl st around beg ch-3 — 12 alternating points.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking and Stiffening the Snowflake

For the best results, block and stiffen the finished snowflake.

Place the snowflake right-side down on a blocking mat. Use rustproof pins to shape the snowflake and straighten each point. With a small paintbrush, apply a thin coat of fabric stiffener, following the directions on the product.

Allow the snowflake to dry completely before removing the pins. Once dry, sew a piece of thread through one point and knot the ends together to create a hanging loop.
