Cluster Burst Afghan Crochet Pattern

Here’s what you will need:

• a basket full of worsted weight yarn scraps (feel free to use different yarn weights from your stash … I use two strands of sock yarn or lighter weight yarns and separate strands from chunkier yarns for consistent sizing)
• 2 skeins of worsted weight yarn for your main color and joining, approx. 340 yds each (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice® Yarn in Linen)
• 1 skein each of 3 colors for border, approx. 170 yd each (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice® in Lullaby Pink, Sweet Pea, and Duckie)
• US H-8 / 5 mm crochet hook
• scissors and a tapestry needle

Cluster Burst Granny Square Pattern

First things first, make up a whole bunch of Cluster Burst Granny Squares with my pattern here. As noted above, I used scraps from my stash to make all the centers and then used Lion Brand

108 squares for a 31 in. × 40 in. lapghan.

Joining Your Squares

Once you have made all your squares, it is time to join them. For this afghan, I chose a basic no-frills slip stitch join. This is a super easy way to join your squares and minimizes lots of tails to weave in. Using the same color you used for the outer round of your Cluster Burst Square, join your squares using my photo tutorial here. For my lapghan, I joined 9 squares per row for 12 rows.

Edging Your Afghan

Once you’ve got all your squares joined, it’s time for your border. Here is another fun opportunity for you to play with colors! For these rounds, I continued incorporating my Linen color, but this time added Vanna’s Choice Baby Yarn in Lullaby Pink, Sweet Pea, and Duckie as well. I love, love, love the result.  Voila! Here is my finished lapghan, all ready to keep me cozy while I work. Don’t mind my messy office!
