Couldn’t we all use a little comfort now and then?! This easy chunky crochet blanket pattern is the epitome of comfort. Made with bulky-weight yarn and a large crochet hook, it’s a relaxing project that works up quickly and creates a cozy blanket that’s perfect for snuggling.
The best part? You only need to know one stitch—the half double crochet! Once you get into the rhythm, you can let your mind wander or get lost in a good movie while you crochet.
What makes this blanket a little different is where you place the stitches. Instead of working each half double crochet through the usual top two loops, you’ll work between the posts of the stitches in the row below. This creates a beautiful, subtle texture without the horizontal yarn-over bar typically seen in rows of half double crochet.
I love the finished effect! And not only is this chunky crochet blanket a comforting project to make, but it’s also wonderfully cozy to cuddle up with afterward.

Special Stitch: Half Double Crochet Between Posts
The half double crochet (hdc) stitch is worked as usual, but instead of inserting your hook through the top two loops of the stitch below, you’ll insert it between the posts of the stitches.
To work a half double crochet:
- Yarn over.
- Insert your hook into the indicated space between stitch posts.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.
Working between the posts creates a slightly different texture and minimizes the horizontal yarn-over bar usually visible across a row of half double crochet stitches.
Pattern Notes
- The beginning ch 2 counts as the first hdc throughout the pattern.
- The blanket is worked back and forth in rows.
- To adjust the width, change the starting chain length.
- To adjust the length, continue repeating the pattern row until your blanket reaches the desired measurement.
- Check your gauge before starting, especially if substituting yarn.

an easy to follow stunning blanket I love it.
so do you just hdc under the stich each time instead of through the top chain .
Yes, you would crochet between the stitches under the top loops of the stitch and the third loop created from the yarnover.
Such a simple comment and I have been crocheting for 54 years! I hated the first row of chains and then going in to the chain which always twisted. Now even an old dog learnt a new trick go under the stitch and all your problems will disappear,
