This free felted wine tote crochet pattern creates a sturdy reusable carrier sized for a standard bottle of wine. The tote is crocheted with worsted-weight wool, then felted to produce a dense fabric that holds its shape without sagging or stretched stitches.
Customize the tote with your favorite colors and stripe sequence, or follow the burgundy and gray striping plan included below. It makes a thoughtful hostess, housewarming, wedding, or holiday gift—and provides reusable wrapping for a favorite bottle.
The finished tote fits a standard 750 ml wine bottle after felting. Because different wool yarns can shrink at different rates, check the fit frequently during the felting process.

Pattern Notes
- Use non-superwash wool or another yarn specifically labeled as feltable.
- Acrylic, cotton, and superwash wool will not felt properly.
- The tote is worked from the bottom up in joined rounds.
- Do not turn after completing a round.
- The beginning ch-2 counts as the first hdc.
- The beginning ch-1 does not count as a stitch.
- Join each round with a sl st unless otherwise instructed.
- To change colors between rounds, complete the joining sl st of the previous round with the new color. Carry colors loosely up the inside only over short intervals; fasten off a color when it will not be used again for several rounds.
- If carrying yarn up the inside of the tote, keep the strands loose enough to accommodate shrinkage during felting.
- Weave in the wool ends loosely before felting so they can shrink with the fabric.
- Felting results vary by yarn and washing method. Check the tote frequently and stop when it fits your bottle properly.

Felting the Crochet Wine Tote
The tote will look too large for a 750 ml bottle before felting. The additional size allows for the shrinkage that occurs during the felting process.
Place the tote in the washing machine with a load of like-colored jeans or towels. Wash it in hot water using a setting that provides enough agitation to felt the wool. Consider possible color transfer just as you would when washing a new garment.
Check the tote every 5 to 10 minutes when possible. Stop the felting process when the fabric is dense and the tote fits comfortably around a standard 750 ml bottle.
Rinse the tote in cool water. Place it between two towels and press or roll gently to remove the excess moisture. Do not wring or twist it.
Place a clean, empty 750 ml bottle or similarly sized form inside the tote. Arrange the bottom, sides, and handles, then allow the tote to dry completely.
Once dry, remove the bottle and lightly trim any loose fibers if needed. Your felted crochet wine tote is ready for dinner out, holiday giving, or your next hostess gift!

Hi, I made your felted purse and the red bled all over the off-white. I used Patons Classic Wool. Does Cascade 220’s red not run? Thanks!
Oh no! I would hesitate to say that Cascade 220 would never run but in my experience using it it has never run.
Cascade 220 worsted is on sale at Craftsy right now – $7.20 a hank. Just stocked up. BTW, you are a wonderful blogger – your patterns & tips are the best. Keep up the great work!
Awww, thank you so much, Swaantje!
Hello, try as I might, I only get 38 stitches at the end of round 4. Am I missing something? I even mapped it on paper, and still it comes up to 38.
