Star Spangled Banner Crochet Bunting

Star Spangled Banner Crochet Bunting

I saw someone on Ravelry work up my Granny Star Pattern in red, white, and blue and thought that would be a perfect idea for a 4th of July bunting! And so the Star Spangled Banner Bunting came to be …

Here’s what you need:

  • red, white, and blue worsted weight yarn
  • H hook
  • tapestry needle, scissors

Star

This time I worked the star up a little differently than in my original Granny Star Pattern by using double crochet clusters in the first two rounds.

Special Stitches:

Two double crochet cluster (2dc-cl): Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat once more (3 loops will be on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Three double crochet cluster (3dc-cl): Yarn over, insert hook into specified stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, repeat 2 more times (4 loops will be on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

With red, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as part of 1st cluster), work 2dc-cl in ring, ch 1, *3dc-cl, ch 1, rep from * 4 more times, join and fasten off — 6 clusters.

Round 2: Join white in any ch-1 sp, ch 2 (counts as part of 1st cluster), work 2dc-cl in in same ch-sp, ch 2, 3dc-cl is same ch-sp, ch 1, *[3dc-cl, ch 2, 3dc-cl] in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, rep from * 4 more times, join and fasten off — 12 clusters.

Round 3: Join blue in any ch-1 sp, ch 1, work 1 sc in same ch-sp, work [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, * 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next ch-2 sp, rep from * 4 more times, join — 42 sts.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Flag

With red, ch 4 (counts as ch 1 plus 1st dc of Row 1).

Row 1: Work 7 dc in 4th ch from hook, turn — 8 sts.

Row 2: Join white, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in same st, work 2 dc in each remaining st, turn — 16 sts.

Row 3: Join blue, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in same st, work 1 dc in next st, *work 2 dc in next st, work 1 dc in next st, rep from * across, turn — 24 sts.

Row 4: Join white, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in same st, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, *work 2 dc in next st, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, rep from * across, turn — 32 sts.

Row 5: Join red, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in same st, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, *work 2 dc in next st, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, rep from * across. — 40 sts.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

4th of July Crochet Pattern

Work up as many stars and flags as desired. String them into a banner by chaining a few stitches (I used 8 chains between each piece) and then working single crochets into the stars and flags to attach them.

I like the blue yarn you used, it reminds me of denim. Do you remember the brand and color?
    Thanks for the cute pattern!
