Finished blanket measures approximately 49 in. x 70 in. as written.
To modify size, chain any amount and start working the half double crochets in the third chain from hook.
The half double crochet stitch used in this chunky crochet blanket pattern is worked as a usual half double crochet but instead of working through the top two loops of a stitch as is usually done, you will work between the posts of the stitches in the row below (under all the loops of the stitch ... the top loops and the third yarn over loop).
As a refresher, to work a half double crochet, abbreviated as hdc, you need to yarn over and insert your hook, yarn over again and pull loop through, yarn over again and pull through all three loops on hook.
