Sizes Included
1-3 lb: 8.5-9″ circumference, 3.5-4″ length

3-5 lb: 11-11.5″ circumference, 4-5″ length

6-8 lb: 12-12.5″ circumference, 5-6″ length

9-11 lb (Newborn): 13-14″ circumference, 6-6.5″ length

  • Extra soft worsted weight yarn, Lion Brand, Vanna’s Choice recommended

1-3 lb:

  • Fern: 50 yards of yarn
  • Sweet Pea: 10 yards of yarn
  • Kelly Green: 10 yards of yarn
  • Black: 1 yard of yarn

3-5 lb:

  • Fern: 67 yard of yarn
  • Sweet Pea: 10 yards of yarn
  • Kelly Green: 10 yards of yarn
  • Black: 1 yard of yarn

6-8 lb: ~43 yards of yarn

  • Fern: 76 yards of yarn
  • Sweet Pea: 10 yards of yarn
  • Kelly Green: 10 yards of yarn
  • Black: 1 yard of yarn

9-11 lb (Newborn):

  • Fern: 84 yards of yarn
  • Sweet Pea: 10 yards of yarn
  • Kelly Green: 10 yards of yarn
  • Black: 1 yard of yarn

 

  • G-6 (4.00mm) crochet hook
  • 2 small black buttons
  • Stuffing
  • Fabric scissors
  • Yarn needle, to weave ends

Gauge
3 dc stitches × 2 rows is 1″

*Change the hook size to obtain the gauge.

  • Start in the same stitch as chain.
  • (11 sts) means how many stitches you should have at the end of the row. That count does includes the chain.

1-3 lb Preemie Hat

Staring with Fern yarn, ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around dc in next st, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Rounds 4-6: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (30 sts)

Round 7: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, fpdc in next st, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (30 sts)

3-5 lb Preemie Hat

Starting with Fern yarn, ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

9-11 lb Newborn Hat

Starting with Fern yarn, ch 3

Round 1: 11 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join in top of first dc (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (23 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (34 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts* repeat * to * around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Rounds 5-11: ch 2, dc in each st around, join in top of first dc (45 sts)

Round 12: ch 2, fpdc in first st, bpdc in next st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in top of first fpdc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (45 sts)

Legs (Make 4)

Starting with Fern yarn,

ch 2

Round 1: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (5 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (9 sts)

Rounds 3-10: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc (9 sts)

Round 11: ch 1, sc dec around 4 times, join in first sc dec, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (5 sts)

  1. stuff legs with stuffing
  2. with Fern yarn and a yarn needle
  3. attach the legs to the 2 front sides, and 2 back sides of hat, toward the ribbing of hat
  4. weave ends

Head

With Fern yarn, ch 2

Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (7 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (13 sts)

Rounds 3-5: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc (13 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, sc in each st around, join in first sc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (13 sts)

  1. stuff head with stuffing
  2. with Black yarn and a yarn needle
  3. stitch a smile and 2 eyes between rounds 1-3
  4. with Fern yarn and a yarn needle
  5. attach the head just above the ribbing, front and center of hat
  6. weave ends

Shell

(I made 7, but you may want to only want to use 4 for the small sizes.)

Starting with Kelly Green yarn, ch 2

Round 1: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in first sc (6 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in first sc (11 sts)

Cut yarn and change to Sweet Pea yarn.

Round 3: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* repeat * to * around, join in first sc, cut yarn, fasten off, weave ends (16 sts)

  1. with Sweet Pea yarn and a yarn needle
  2. attach the shell pieces to the top of the hat (I didn’t stitch the shells together, just to the hat) I’ve added a visual guide below using the pattern I used
  3. weave ends
